It was right before the start of term and what better than to have a luxurious time and venture around Diagon Alley. Lily had just gone out of the bookstore after reviewing some of the new edition of certain books relating to charms and potions, some of her favorite subjects in school.
The day was hot and humid and there was nothing to do at the moment than to walk around in the blazing hot sun. She looked around for something to do and she saw that there was ice cream. It was worth paying for when it was a day like this. Lily walked over to the ice cream parlour and stood in line while looking at the many flavors there were. She was a Cotton Candy kind of person, but she wanted to try something different. There was Bertie Botts Ice Cream, Chocolate Frog Batter, and even the famous muggle ice cream that she grew up with: Neopoletian. "How can I help you?" said the man behind the counter. It seemed that she was up next and she didn't even chose what she wanted.
"Can I try your Chocolate Frog Batter?" she asked, and the man scooped some up from the carton onto the spoon. She took a taste test and thought of it was decent, but it wasn't as good as her usual pick of Cotton Candy. She began to look some more to see if there was any other ice cream flavors that interested her. Little did she know that someone she knew was close by.

James had gotten separated from Sirius... like that always did every year. Sirius probably some some chick in a skirt and couldn't help himself. So James figured he'd kill some time and go to where they usually met back up after getting separated. Aside from that, he really was hungry. His parents would probably be upset with him for not eating a proper meal, but they didn't have to know. "Chocolate Almond and Butter Pecan," he said. And then not two seconds later, he heard a very familiar voice. He turned his head and smiled- but then memories of what he'd been told filled his mind and he held back his excited to see her. Damn, this was going to be hard.
"Hey Evans," he said, paying the person behind the counter and grabbing his cone. "Excited about a new term? Some idiot went and made me head boy this year. Can you believe it?" he asked happily.

While Lily was trying to decide, she heard a voice call out to her. She looked up to see that it was James. She was happy to see him, though it seemed that he didn't feel the same. "Hey Potter," she said, and quickly went back to her picking for a quick second. Oh, she couldn't find anything else that she wanted, so she had picked Cotton Candy as usual instead. "Cotton Candy please," she said, and the guy behind the counter scooped her a large scoop of Cotton Candy ice cream on a cone. He gave it to her and she paid for it right on the spot. "Thank you," she said, and her attention was back on James.
She was nearly shocked when he said he was Head Boy. She couldn't help but to give a slight laugh. "You? Head Boy? Someone was an idiot," she teased. "Well it just so happens that I got a letter saying I was awarded Head Girl," she said and began licking her ice cream. She knew sooner or later, her whole mouth will turn as purple because of the ice cream. "I guess, we will be working together," she added.

He wanted to hug her. They had actually reached that point in their friendship before term ended before the summer. But hugging her would hurt too much when he knew that he couldn't be more than her friend. Damn it, this was going to be torture. "No surprise there," he said. "You're only the most brilliant witch in our year. Congratulations, love." Crap. He'd already slipped. Where the hell was Sirius when he needed solidarity. If you really loved her, you'd stay away from her. "So... um... how was your summer?" He actually had written to her over the beginning of it. Quite a few times. He had stopped after the mysterious stranger arrived on his doorstep. Sirius had told him he was being drastic. That he could still be with Lily and things wouldn't have to work out the way the traveler said... But why take any chances. He would at least wait until they were passed the age when their son was supposed to be born. That was the only way he could be sure.

Lily stared at James. She was confused on his facial expression and the tension that seemed to run through his veins. She felt like something was wrong and usually she would be the type of girl to point it out, but for some reason, she couldn't find the urge to ask. Plus, her mouth was always filled with ice cream every time it was empty. "Why, thank you," she said, smiling at his compliment. Officially, Lily was falling for him little by little. Oh the years when she first met him- she thought of his as a conceited, gross, little goblin. But now, he was something totally different- he was someone new that she was beginning to love.
"My summer was pretty decent. Petunia didn't talk to me at all though. I should be getting used to it now. I wish she could accept who I am and just grow up out of her jealousy phase, you know? If I have had a child, I would surely never leave him or her at her house. Sometimes I wonder about her," she said, licking some more of her ice cream. She then realized that she was over the delectable treat and walked over to the trash can to throw it out.
"How was yours? Were you very busy?" she asked, indirectly wondering about why he never sent her any more owls. In the beginning of the summer, he sent a whole bunch. At least a letter every day or every other day. But then it had stopped and she never received one owl from him. To be honest, it kind of made her disappointed, frustrated and confused. She didn't know what she had done wrong for him to stop writing to her. Hopefully he was just too busy.

He inwardly winced when she mentioned having a child. The stranger had gone into great detail about that. The sad part was, he'd love to have a child with Lily. He would seriously consider marrying her had that man not walked into his life. But then they'd only have a few years together. Even less with their son. And then he would die... She would die. And there son would be left to her horrible sister. He wouldn't do that. He couldn't do that. "Yeah, well, we don't always get to pick our family," he said. "Sirius can tell you all about that some time," he said with a smile.
"I was busy, yeah," he admitted. "As you know, Sirius ran away from home and has been staying at my place. My parents adore him as a son, but man they took advantage of having young blood around the house. They made us fix everything," he laughed. "I missed you," he let slip. He was not going to apologize for it. He still loved her, damn it. Couldn't he still love her and not have a child with her? That was possible. He just had to take it one day at a time, just like Sirius had said. He was no longer interested in his ice cream either, so he set the bowl aside and then reached out for her hand. "Like... I really missed you."

Lily sort of new Sirius' background. She knew enough that he didn't get along with his family. At least everyone in his family were Slytherins when they entered Hogwart, and Sirius happened to be a Gryffindor. There was definitely a lot of fights at home for him and she felt sorry for a guy like him. He never deserved to be in such a family. It was one thing to have one sister be an arse, but it was another to have the whole family. "I'm glad you took him in. You guys are like brothers anyways," she said, remembering the two together throughout the years and wondering what this year would bring.
It then hit her. He had said that he missed her. Lily's heart stopped, but she couldn't let his words get to her. Actions speak louder than words, and what he had showed her throughout the summer was that he didn't even care. He grabbed her hands and she slowly peeled them away. "James, if you really missed me, you would have sent me a letter. Busy or not, you could have made time to let me know how you were. You just stopped without any warning in the beginning of the summer...," she didn't want to get angry at him. Not now, she couldn't, but she couldn't not let him know of her feelings right at this moment. "How do you think its supposed to make me feel to hear you say that when you haven't even shown me any sign of how much you think about me," she said.

He sighed. "I think about you all of the time. You know that. It's just... complicated now. I don't want you to get hurt, Lily," he said. Well, now he'd have to explain what he meant by that, and he didn't even know if he could. "I stopped writing because something happened. And I can't tell you what happened exactly... but... It scared the shit out of me. I don't know... I... I must not be making any sense." He let go of her hand and leaned back in his chair. "I want to be with you more than anything. But I don't want to put you in danger. I love you too much to lose you." There, he'd said it. "I do love you, Lily. I've loved you for a while... I just wish that made everything better."

Lily looked at him. She could tell how hard it was for him to at least get what he called some sort of explaination out. Although she had wanted a reason right then and now, she could be patient enough to understand what he was saying. She just listened to him since really, it was what he needed at the moment. She listened and heard his words saying that he loved her. She had always wanted to hear them. It was the first time that he actually had said it the way he did and she didn't even know what to say. Or at least the right thing to say.
"How can you loving me put me in danger? James, I don't understand what this is about, but whatever it is, we can both get through it. Well because...," Could she say the words back? She felt that it was too soon to say it, but she had began to grow feelings for him that she could feel are real. It's like the man in front of her is the one for her. "... Well you see... I want to be with you too," she knew she had more to say to him. But it was coming out so quickly and her heart was pounding every time a word came out of her small lips. "I love you too," she said.

It was such a feeling that washed over him. Overwhelming... and bittersweet. His hand squeezed hers and he felt like crying. "Time," he said. "I just need some time," he said. "I will tell you everything one day, but I can't right now. If you could just..." he stopped. "I have no right to ask you to wait for me, but that's what I'm doing. I will marry you one day, Lily. I promise you that. But... for now, the most important thing is knowing that you're safe. So... I just need time. As far as I'm concerned, by heart belongs to you. I'm yours and there won't be any others. I know I can't ask you to not see anybody while I'm trying to sort things out, but you won't have to worry about me seeing anybody else. You're the only woman I see, and it's going to be like that for the rest of our lives..." He just had to make sure that the rest of their lives were longer than a few years.

Lily could feel his emotions in the squeeze of his hands. She could tell that he was happy, but his voice... his words... they all meant a whole another thing. She listened and at the end squeezed his hands and just looked at him with her emerald eyes. Was he really not going to tell her and let her wait. She began to think if it was just karma biting her back in the arse. She made him wait for so many years until she loved him that now it was her turn to wait. Could she even wait? How did he deal with such a mess?
Just hearing his words that she was the only woman he saw had made her heart jump. It made her just want to snog him all night, but she couldn't. Two reasons why. One, it wasn't like her to do such a thing and two, he had wanted her to wait and just like her respected her wishes, she needed to respect his. But it was aching her to know how long but she couldn't ask. "I'll wait for you for as long as it takes. But please, for merlins sake, don't make me wait until I'm old," she said, giving him a loving smile. "Because surely I won't look as good as I am now," she said, lightening the mood a smidgen.

"You'll always be beautiful to me, Lily," James said seriously. He didn't know how long it was going to take. Until after they were meant to hook up? Until after Harry was meant to be born? Could he really deny their son an existence because he was afraid of dying? Wouldn't it be enough to not make Peter their secret keeper? God... he wasn't supposed to know any of this stuff. Just knowing screwed with things. Why couldn't the stranger have stayed in the future. If thing were meant to happen a certain way, then at least James could have led a happy life for the next few years instead of constantly worrying as he was doing now. "Soon... I'll be able to tell you everything soon. But I can't now. I'm not even sure if I understand it all myself."

Lily's heart fluttered. In the past he would always say certain love phrases perfectly, but it never meant as much as he means it now. Her green eyes were studying him. James looked as if he was shattering into pieces at any second. What was he thinking? He seemed like something was going to happen and with the sound of his voice, that it was going to be something horrible. Lily understood, but she was worried. Worried to the point that she was extremely curious. But she couldn't interrogate him with questions. She can tell that he was hurting inside.
"I'll wait. Don't worry," she said, looking down at her hands which were on the table drawn together. She was slightly playing with her fingers while listening to him speak. She then began to think how tables were turned between James and her. At first James would come up to her and she would reject him on his every moves and attempts and now... Once she decided to give her heart to James, it was as if she was sort of rejected too. Luckily, he still loved her though and that's all that matters.
"Um... So with this problematic situation of yours... Does this mean that we can't hang out with each other when we can, or would that put us in danger?" she asked, just asking him one question. She needed to know if she can at least spend some time with the man she loves, or if she was to just hide from him when she sees him.

He smiled at her now, standing up to move his chair closer to hers. "Of course we can still hang out with one another. You know Sirius adores you like a sister, and we can't get enough of you. I'm not trying to banish you from my life. I'm just saying, maybe we just need to put a romance on pause." He trailed off for a moment. "There is something, though... that I've wanted to do since our fifth year. Something that I need to do. I don't know if this is going to make it harder... or easier... but..." He turned towards her and put his hand beneath her chin, turning her face towards his. "I just want..." He moved in closer, his eyes looking deep into her beautiful emerald pools. "To kiss you." His lips touched hers lightly, fluttering over hers for a few seconds before he sealed the kiss. He meant to pull away almost instantly, but he was drawn in. As the kiss became more passionate, he began to imagine spending the rest of his life kissing her. There would never be anybody else for him, and he knew it. But thinking of a life with her, married, with kids... it only reminded him how short that life would be. That pulled him away and he looked down at the table miserably. "I'm... I'm sorry. I... uh... I need to find Sirius," he said. He stood up and was about to leave, but stopped and half turned. "I'm sure he'd like to see you? Want to help me look for him?"

Lily observed him scooting closer while he said that they can still be with each other but not romantically. It bummed her out, but she was fine with that. It was until her ears perked at his words. He had wanted to do something since fifth year? What was that? She began to think, and instantly she knew. Fifth year was the year that he began to chase after her. She felt his strong hands under her chin and she looked up at him. Lily began to get extremely nervous. What if her kiss wasn't as great? She prayed that she was a good kisser for him, but she also prayed he was a good kisser too.
The closer they got, Lily wondered what his lips would taste like... How they would feel... How she would feel to the kiss. All these wonders were making her more nervous by the second. When they were only inches away, Lily's eyes were closed. She wanted to get the whole feel; especially the shock of fireworks zapping through her mind and body.
Then, finally. Their lips had joined together and immediately it went into something deep and passionate. Lily knew that this wasn't helping her nor him. But every second was worth it. He had then pulled away from her and looked miserable. Lily was shocked. The kiss was amazing to her, but was it not to him? Did she make him wait too long that his spark that he needed was gone? James got up to leave, and Lily immediately looked down to the side. "Was it-" she was about to ask him what he felt about the kiss, but he had began his own question. It seemed that she started off too soft when she tried to ask him, but it was alright.
"I'd love to go and find him with you," she said. "Were you two together earlier?" she asked.
